Carnival in Martinique, freedom and nothing else!

About

From the birth of the carnival during colonisation, through its hour of glory in Saint-Pierre at the beginning of the 20th century, to the carnival 3.0 that we know today, it crosses the path of many witnesses. Sociologists, anthropologists, associations, but also musicians, singers, seamstresses and other enthusiasts tell part of the great history of the Martinique carnival. All agree on one thing. This event, which is an essential part of the island’s cultural heritage, has always been a festive and joyful thumbing of the nose at the powers, at institutions and at prejudices. From Shrove Sunday to Ash Wednesday, nothing can stand in the way of the carnivalesque delirium of the Martiniquais. It is freedom and nothing else!
