TAKANAKUY

About

Chumbilvicas: a province in the South of Peru where Christmas rhymes with in your face, blood, lost teeth and spit!

For more than five centuries, every December 25th the locals fight with their bare fists on the central plaza in Santo Tomas – the province capital. They call it Takanakuy.

Those violent brawls aim to resolve social, familial and neighborhood disputes.

In order to better understand this ancestral tradition, director Patrice Laidin followed Alipio’s family: they have been engaging in this event – the only one of its kind in the world – for 34 years.
